Adrian Rhodes at 701 Contemporary Art Center
How to Untie a Tight Knot on view through September 1, 2022

July 13, 2022, by Dawn Hunter

Adrian Rhodes The 701 CCA Prize 2020 winner was awared a six-week residency to the 701 CCA. During that time, she completed her solo exhibition How to Untie a Tight Knot. She is trained as a printmaker, and she works primarily in mixed media and has become widely known as an installation artist. She received her BFA and MFA degrees from Rock Hill’s Winthrop University. She has exhibited extensively throughout the Carolinas and is a top emerging artist on the national and international scene – an artist to watch! From 701 CCA’s exhibition statement: “Adrian Rhodes’ work is about relationships, and the complexity of closeness- the desire to separate from your past and return to it in the same breath. For Rhodes, print becomes a method for creating structure. This framework, indulging a desire for order, creates space for disruption. Using prints as modular components allows the work to inherit visual information across a body of work. She is interested in how this repetition of imagery and motif reflects recurring thought patterns and an unwillingness to move on.”

The Jasper Project presents: Ginny Merett

Ginny Merett is an artist and art educator who has been active in the Columbia art scene during the past three decades. Her signature style is graphic, bold collages that appear quirky and lighthearted at first glance however the work resonates on a deeper, psychological level regarding culture, gender and racial identity, and societal expectations. She is currently The Jasper Project's Artist-in-Residence, and her compelling work can be viewed at Sound Bites, located at 1425 Sumter St Columbia, SC 29201 in downtown historic Columbia. Her work will continue to be on view through the end of July, 2022.
From The Jasper Project’s Statement: "Ginny’s collage pieces have been shown at Stormwater Studio, ArtFields, Koger Center for the Arts, the Jasper Project, USC School of Visual Art and Design’s McMaster Gallery, SC State Library, and other local venues like Trustus Theater, She Festival, Cottontown Art Crawl and Melrose Art in the Yard. Her work is published in the Jasper Project’s Jasper Magazine, Spring 2019 edition and in Sheltered: SC Artists Respond During the 2020 Pandemic and in Bullets and Band-Aids Volume 3. She gives back to the community by visiting and sharing her work with various area schools and donating art to local charities."

[NON] FICTION
Artwork by Margaret Curtis on View at the
Florence County Art Museum until July 3, 2022.

Photo Essay by Dawn Hunter, June 2, 2022.

Curator's Exhibition Statement: "The paintings of North Carolina-based artist Margaret Curtis have been called “curious collages of surreal symbolism.” Her images are visually rich and psychologically complex – the result of a challenging lifelong personal and artistic journey. For the past 30 years, Curtis’ art has examined family, politics, and power through a feminist lens. Before returning to the South, Curtis taught and exhibited in New York. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections and has been featured in Harper’s, Art in America, Art Forum, Modern Painters, and The New York Times. This exhibition is on view in the Special Exhibits Gallery from February 8 through July 3, 2022."

Margaret Curtis is one of the United State's most important living artists. Her work is unique, innovative, and gripping. She is represented by the Tracy Morgan Gallery, Asheville, NC. Not only is she a storyteller with imagery, but the physicality of her oil paintings makes compelling visceral connections to the content of her work. Curtis's artwork is critically acclaimed and nationally recognized. Recently she has been honored with a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship. The Joan Mitchell Fellowship is a prestigious award, and artists are selected through a rigorous nomination process. Artists are awarded $60,000. And the funding is disbursed over four years. Margaret has used her grant to build on and expand her studio. Please click on the images below to generate a slide show of Margaret's work.

ARTFIELDS 1OTH ANNIVERSARY, LAKE CITY, SOUTH CAROLINA, APRIL 22-30, 2022.

PHOTO ESSAY BY DAWN HUNTER, May 2, 2022.

ArtFields celebrated its 10th anniversary and exhibited 369 artists from 12 different southeast states in the competition. The nine-day arts festival ran from April 22-30, 2022. We were delighted that "The Darcy Inventory" was selected and included in this year's competition however, our greatest delight came from viewing the festival as attendees through the lens of South Carolina Sunshine. We were in awe and inspired by the artists, curators, staff, volunteers, and greater Lake City community that makes ArtFields a phenomenal - "can't miss it" - event! We hope you enjoy the art in this photo essay as much as we did.

From www.artfieldssc.org: "ArtFields started in 2013 with a simple goal: honor the artists of the Southeast with 9 days worth of celebration and competition while revitalizing a small Southern town. The competition and exhibition offers over $100,000 in cash prizes. The winners of two People's Choice Awards are determined by the votes of people visiting ArtFields a panel of art professionals selects all the other awards, including the $50,000 Grand Prize and $25,000 Second Place award." This years competition winners were Noah Scalin, Grand Prize for "OF AMERICA: SEPTEMBER 4, 1957," MyLoan Dinh, Second Place for "Thanks but No Thanks," Melvin Toledo, People's Choice 2-d work for "A Moment of Peace," and Jonathan Imafidor, People's Choice 3-d work for "I Lay Out a Bait."
