Dawn Hunter Art™
Summer Studio Visit, August 10, 2022

This summer has brought a lot of wonderful opportunities and unexpected fulfillment. Aside from my Plein Air painting and drawing practice, I was also awarded an Honorable Mention prize for my work, Dueling Cajals, in the 2022 Art of Neuroscience competition out of the Netherlands. The end of July was capped off with some unexpected good news and a tremendous opportunity. I was elected to the Board of Directors of the long-standing prestigious organization, the Cajal Club, founded in 1947 by Wendell Krieg. As a board member, I will serve as the organization's Golgi Apparatus, which means I am their webmaster. During the last week of July and the first week of August, I invested time in giving their website an overhaul: hard work and collaboration with top, internationally renowned Neuroscientists I have admired for years. It is a tremendous honor to redesign and maintain their website.

You can learn more about my summer adventures in the thematic sections below.

Summertime Drawing Board

This summer , my studio practice consisted of completing many drawings of the Rodin exhibition that was on view at the Columbia Museum of Art, outdoor Plein air sketching at the Riverbanks Zoo, and a then fusion of both processes in my studio. This photo essay contains a sample of all of the processes, plus some drawings of Rodin statues that I completed in Madrid (those drawings have an orange background.) This summer's CMA Rodin drawings either have a white or yellow background.

I have called this essay a "drawing board," rather than a sketchbook, because once back in the studio - I was able to take the many artworks further. Click on the reel links above to learn more about the processes for thematic works.

Dueling Cajals receives Honorable Mention in prestigious international sciart competition.

Jurors Dr. Bevil Conway, Dr. Flora Lysen and Dr. Sabine Niederer

"This submission struck the jury because of its emphasis on the history of neuroscience. The work highlights how any scientific process, particularly scientific image-making, can be influenced by a multilayering of cultural and historical factors. The jury admired how diverse periods in time from this historical perspective were weaved into one image, and appreciated the effort that went into investigating the sources that Cajal was exposed to. Dueling Cajals serves as an important reminder for neuroscientists to recognize history and its influence on their work. " - AoN, NIN, NL

Cajal CLuB Website Design

I feel Honored, humbled and proud to be elected to the Cajal Club Board of Directors. What an Opportunity, I have so Many Emotions and I am completely Speechless that they would select me to create a new website for their organization. During the transition From July to August, my life was full of Hard work, collaboration, and Feedback from and with top Neuroscientists that I have admired for Years (!) - the new website is now live. It is an ongoing Endeavor, a garden that will continue to flourish and Grow. Stay Tuned, more Content is Yet to come. Link is in the button above this text.

The 4th Page of the Award Pages

A lot of the website design involved creating meaningful content with indexed text. Because of the volume of previous awardees, it was a challenge. However, I was able to incorporate content with the form that resonates meaning with the organization. Like this photo from the Smithsonian of Elizabeth C. Crosby juxtaposed behind the list of awardees, the first recipient of the Pinckney J. Harman Memorial Lecture.

History and Proceedings

Like the Award pages, the Proceedings presented a challenge because it is an archive that is based in language, and the content needed to be arranged in an aesthetic, but cogent manner. Thus, my interpretations of Cajal's drawing became the context in which to index the content. The design scheme relied on subtle tints and shades of yellow-orange and blue-violet.

The lush grounds of the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has provided me with inspiration over the years, I relish drawing there each summer.

Featured in this studio visit are my sketchbook drawings from the Riverbanks Zoo. Some of the attractions of have changed over the years, for example the Zoo now has a White Rhino exhibit and no longer houses elephants. This summer, the aquarium is closed for renovations, but I still included a few examples from past years' drawings. Click on any image to generate a slide show of the portfolio.

Dawn Hunter Art™ Studio visit, 4-13-2022

This month I have two 10 year anniversary events happening that feature my artwork: 1) ArtFields, Lake City, SC, April 20-30, 2022 and 2) The Jasper Project 10th Anniversary celebration at 701 Whaley on April 14, 2022.

Your Subtitle HereIt is that time of year again: ArtFields! This year marks the 10th anniversary of the competition. I am delighted that The Darcy Inventory have been selected for this event. Other than preparing for the exhibition, we have been busy making Instagram Reels. The Darcy Inventory is a portrait installation I created during the month of October that explores race, identity, societal norms, and the daughter/mother relationship within contemporary culture.

Before I took the work to Lake City for installation, Darcy and I had a photo and Instagram reel shoot. It was a fun day and we got a lot of great images. Photo by Darcy Phelps.

The Darcy Inventory Installed at the ROB

Curator, Jonelle Logan organized the exhibit and installed much of the work at the venue, The ROB. Many talented artists are featured at the venue, and Jonelle beautifully organized the work. Individual pieces stand out, and the entire exhibit works as a whole. Impressive curatorial work with such a diverse group of works. Photo by Jordan Sheridan.

Dawn Hunter Art™ Studio visit, 2-17-2022

I have been writing as much as I have been painting. Visit: dawnhunterart.blogspot.com, link below, to read my latest post: Your Cheatin' Heart, an article that examines plagiarism and offers instructions to readers on how to copyright a PowerPoint or Professional Presentation. The creative process feels slow this week, but gratifying. I continue to work on the creative artwork series about Santiago Ramón y Cajal. To that end, I have hung up all of the drawings from my Las Vegas show when they were returned. Those works in their collective chorus continue to inform my handmade sketchbook about Cajal.

Inside COver

Cajal was a cobbler and made shoes. One of the skills he developed was sewing, which makes sense. I firmly believe that great sewers are great drawers. Both mediums depend on the quality of the line! Photo by Dawn Hunter.

Hard to work inside when it is sunny outside

Thankfully, my studio is well lit however, the weather in South Carolina has been beautiful during the past two days, making it tough to stay indoors. Drawing the Plein Air landscape drawing is in order!
